Gene Allen Johnson

Gene Allen Johnson, age 76, of Bristol, VA passed away on April 5, 2017. He was born on July 25, 1940 in Broadford, Va. to the late John Edward Johnson and Rachel Buchanan Johnson Earle. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by two brothers, Burton Johnson and Jerry Johnson. Gene was a graduate of Glade Spring High School, Emory and Henry College and received his master's degree from Radford College. He was a long time teacher, principal, and assistant principal in the Washington County Virginia school system for more than 41 years before retiring in 2003. Gene was a football and basketball official in the Virginia High School League for many years. He was a member of State Street United Methodist Church and a member of the Bristol Evening Lions Club. He is survived by his wife of more than 45 years, Carrie Johnson; two daughters, Karen Garrett (John Michael) of Brentwood, TN and Kaye Goodfriend (Jeff) of Knoxville, TN; two granddaughters, Riley and Gabby Goodfriend; two grandsons, Jack and Sam Garrett; two loving sisters, Dottie Johnson Bryant (Keith Driscoll) of Charlotte, N.C. and Gwendolyn Johnson Shaffer of Memphis, TN; four nieces; two nephews; and many cousins whom he loved. The family would also like to thank the staff of NHC at Bristol and Caris Hospice for the excellent care he received. Services will be at noon on Monday, April 10 at State Street United Methodist Church with Reverend Jonathan Jonas presiding followed by a reception. Pallbearers are, Jeff Goodfriend, John Michael Garrett, Keith Driscoll, John Moore, Hugh Light and Jeff Wilson. Honorary pallbearers are long time neighbors and friends, Bob Jones, Ben Kerr, Bill Boyles, Howard Stovall and Jim Rector.
