Hobert Chan Brooks,83, of Bristol, Virginia passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2017 in the Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tennessee following a brief illness. He was born in St. Paul, Virginia on April 29, 1933, a son of the late Maurice and Virginia Austin Beckner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Sterling Brooks; one sister, Mary Lou Thompson; and one step daughter, Jenny Lynn Harris. Retired veteran with twenty-two years of service in the United States Army. He served three tours in Vietnam, one tour in Panama, and one tour in Iran. After retiring from the service, Mr. Brooks worked for the University of South Carolina as a Parking Control Officer where he retired with fifteen plus years of service. Mr. Brooks was of the Baptist faith and attended Temple Baptist Church. Mr. Brooks is survived by his loving wife of forty-two years, Barbara Brooks; one son, Bruce Brooks and wife Kay, of Bristol, VA; one daughter, Karen Lambert and husband Dennis, of St. Claire, MO; three brothers, M.G. Beckner and wife Joan, of Appline, GA, Glen Allen Beckner and wife Cathy, of Las Vegas, NV; and Bob Thompson, of Bristol, VA; five step sons, three step daughters, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm Friday, January 20, 2017 at Blevins Funeral & Cremation Services. Funeral Service for Mr. Hobert Chan Brooks will be conducted at 7:00 pm Friday, January 20, 2017, at Blevins Funeral & Cremation Services, with Rev. Dennis Burnette officiating. Committal Service and Interment will be conducted at 1:00 pm Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Mountain View Cemetery, Bristol, Virginia, with military honors to be rendered by the Bristol VFW Honor Guard Post #6975. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the American Heart Assn., PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
