Jane Farrar Baxter

Jane F. Baxter, 89, of Bristol, TN passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Nashville, TN on January 3, 1928 to Robert Lynn Farrar, Sr. and Lilias Morehouse Farrar. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, George W. Baxter, Jr.; her siblings, Robert Lynn Farrar, Jr. and Macon Farrar Wells; and her son, G. William Baxter III. Jane received a BA in Elementary Education from Peabody College for Teachers and taught for 11 years in the Nashville area. Once married and with children, she used her love of teaching to tutor elementary students in reading and math and high school students for the SAT. She was a member of the Delta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa (an international honorary teacher’s sorority) and helped organize chapters in Lakeland, FL and Bristol, TN. She served as a Brownie troop leader and a member of the Appalachian Girl Scout council. She was involved in missions as a member of United Methodist Women and attended State Street United Methodist Church. She loved camping, reading and traveling and was devoted to her family. Jane is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Baxter Smith and husband Michael Parker Smith; her daughter-in-law, Aileen Smith Baxter; and two grandchildren, Colin William Baxter and Hannah Elizabeth Smith. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 5 at State Street United Methodist Church. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 pm following visitation with Reverend Jonathan Jonas and Reverend Mark Hicks officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to State Street UMC, 300 W. Valley Dr., Bristol, VA 24201, or to the American Diabetes Association, P.O.
