Jane Necessary Shankel, 87, of Johnson City, Tennessee passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2018 in the Four Oaks Health Care Center, Jonesborough, Tennessee following an extended illness. She was born in Washington County, Virginia on September 1, 1930, a daughter of the late Henry Sangleton Necessary and Bertha Iona Miller Necessary. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Herbert Shankel; and one sister, Patsy Pullon. She was a very loving and giving mother. She worked for Kern's Bakery in the cafeteria for several years and was know as "Mama Kern's." She loved spending time and being with her grandchildren and doing puzzles. Jane is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Gail Shankel and Sandra K. Dean and her fiancé, Bill Copper; one sister, Linda M VanDyke; one brother, Joe D. Necessary; three grandchildren, Amanda Dean and her fiancé, Sean Martin, Mitchell Dean and Derek Dean and his wife, Lauren; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Blevins Funeral & Cremation Services, 417 Lee Street, Bristol, VA. The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Bill Copper officiating. The committal service and interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association. Donations can be made online.
