Our History

Our History

On 1923, a group of local investors built a building on Moore Street in Bristol, Virginia and founded Bristol Funeral Home, Inc. On April 1, 1928, Les Blevins and J. B. Akard, pioneer undertakers associated with the undertaking department of a local furniture company, purchased the business and changed the name to Blevins-Akard Funeral Home, Inc.

When the Akards left Blevins-Akard to start their own firm in 1933, Les Blevins changed the name of the firm to Blevins Funeral Home and continued to operate from the Moore Street location for the next 20 years. In 1953, Blevins was forced to find a new location quickly because the building's owners wanted to demolish it to expand a business next door. Following a hasty search, Blevins purchased a former residence at 417 Lee Street, about four blocks from the original location.

In 1964, Charles Copenhaver, R. E. Smith, and C. J. Trinkle, all employees of Blevins Funeral Home, purchased the firm from the Blevins family and began planning for the construction of a new building behind the present building. In October of 1965, they moved the funeral home into the new location and demolished the old building for parking. In 1988, Blevins became part of Heritage Family Funeral Services.

  • Jami R Zander

    Jami R Zander Location Manager

    Jami is a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Tennessee. She was born and raised in southwest Virginia and graduated with her Mortuary Degree from John Tyler Community College in 2012. Jami was humbled by the sting of loss at an early age with her mother's untimely passing and felt the calling to serve others. Jami joined our team in November of 2020 as Location Manager of Blevins Funeral Home and Cremation Services. She is married with one son and two step-daughters. Jami enjoys spending time with her family and friends, North Carolina Tar Heels basketball, and Las Vegas Raiders Football.

  • C. Todd Garrett

    C. Todd Garrett Senior Funeral Director~Embalmer

    Todd, a licensed funeral director and embalmer in both Virginia and Tennessee, is the manager of Garrett Funeral Home. Todd is a native of Damascus, Virginia, and attended Holston High School where he was the captain and quarterback of the football team. He attended the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, Cincinnati, Ohio, where he graduated sixth in his class "Cum Laude" in 1992 with an Associate Degree in Mortuary Science. Todd is a member of the Virginia Institute of Funeral Professionals, former president of the Southwest Virginia Funeral Directors Association, and member of the Damascus Citizens Club. Todd is a member of the First Baptist Church and has a son, Nicholas Peyton Garrett, and a daughter, Madison Nicolle Garrett.

  • Scott Greene

    Scott Greene Family Services Counselor

    Scott is a native of Johnson City and graduated from Daniel Boone High School. He is a licensed life insurance agent, with several years of experience. He is an ordained minister, having worked extensively in youth ministries and served as Youth Pastor at several local churches. Scott and his wife Patti live in Bluff City. They have one son, Scott (and daughter-in-law Maryl) and one granddaughter, Amber. They attend Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church. Scott joined our staff in 2018 as a pre-need counselor and has also worked in cemetery and monument sales. His duties with us have recently expanded to include assisting our families full-time in aftercare consulting and pre-arrangement planning.

  • Kim Ryburn

    Kim Ryburn Administrative Assistant

    Kim is a native of Smyth County, VA. She is a graduate of Chilhowie High School, Chilhowie, VA. She is a resident of Damascus, Washington County, VA since 2002. Kim has one son, Shane Ryburn.

  • Terry Davidson

    Terry Davidson Administrative Assistant

    Terry currently lives in Bristol, TN and has returned to Blevins on a part-time basis.

  • Vann Seal

    Vann Seal Funeral Assistant

    Vann is a life long resident of Bristol and retired from Electro-Mechanical Corporation after 31 years of service. Vann has a Bachelor of Theology degree from V.B.C. Bible Institute, entering the ministry in 1987. He currently pastors Pleasant View Baptist Church in Glade Spring, VA. He and his wife Dianne live in Bristol, VA and have four children and 13 grandchildren.
